Wilten Vermessen – a Presentation by Studio Fundus as part of Magic Carpets

November 17, 2023 @ 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm

On 17.11.2023, at 7 PM, Studio Fundus together with Magic Carpets invites to the finissage
of “Wilten vermessen” at Openspace.Innsbruck!

As part of “Kollaboratorium”, the current “Magic Carpets” project cycle, openspace creates a safe
space for artistic experimentation that serves the cultivation of multiple perspectives to encourage
critical reflection and action. This includes exchange and engagement as much as inspiring
learning formats for and with the local cultural landscape. In 2023, we thereby focussed on the
theme “common landscape”. Following the successful residency of the Ukrainian duo Open Place (Yulia Kostereva and Yuriy
Kruchak) in early summer 2023, another artist duo – Juri Velt and Johannes Reisigl – performed at
openspace.innsbruck in October with their hybrid radio research framework “Roaming Rumours of
Resistance”.

We are now ending our annual program with a project by Studio Fundus about and for our
Wilten neighbourhood. In July, our artistic activities in the neighbourhood overlapped and
connected – people got to know each other and supported each other in their processes – just as
good neighbourly relations should be. Studio Fundus became part of the Magic Carpets artist pool
and we cordially invite you all to the finissage of “Wilten vermessen” and to come together in our
beloved neighbourhood.

Surveying Wilten.
Surveying a district, walking through it and questioning it.
Tracing its spaces and structures.
Weaving together stories and narratives.
Photographing, recording, rubbing and tasting Wilten.
Together with residents and users, we traced the Innsbruck district of Wilten. What does Wilten
sound like? How does it taste? What do people associate with the place, which paths do they take
and which real and fictitious boundaries do they cross in the process? Wilten Vermessen was an
open invitation to everyone to experience the place in a new way, to enter into an exchange with it
and with others.

Photographing Wilten.
When the sun is at its highest, the shadows become shorter – and so does the exposure time. The
residents and users of Wilten were depicted in spontaneously choreographed group portraits using
the cyanotype process. Outlines of people, dogs and objects tell of work, leisure and relationships
with one another.

Recording Wilten.
What does a district sound like? What sounds can be captured in Wilten? In exploratory tours,
sound experiments and sound games, the vibrations of Wilten were traced and collected at a
wasteland at the Grassmayr intersection. There, voices, music, street noises and a glockenspiel
overlapped.

Rubbing up Wilten.
Sensing surfaces and making them visible. In a performative walk through the district, the district
structure was rubbed down piece by piece. Unevenness was recorded, torn open and reassembled
into a new image. What haptic experience does our environment offer?

Tasting Wilten.
What does Wilten taste like? A lavishly laid breakfast table invited us to make connections between
flavours and engage in conversation. Traces from the previous explorations could be experienced
and little pieces of Wilten could be taken home.

Celebrating Wilten.
The different elements of Wilten Vermessen are brought together. Gathered together in one room,
new axes and perspectives are found. The joint explorations are made tangible. The space in the
middle of the district is opened up and invited to celebrate together.

in cooperation with Stadtteiltreff Wilten and Magic Carpets / openspace.Innsbruck.

Studio Fundus is an interdisciplinary working collective that combines competencies and
experience from the fields of design, humanities and social sciences, mediation and exhibition
making. This pool of ideas and interests is the basis for their projects. In a process of working
together, they explore the urban environment and the society in which they live with open eyes.
The aim is to collaboratively engage with current issues and work together with different
disciplines. A content-driven design and processing of the topics enables them to be mediated and
made tangible. The design is part of the research and a tool for raising new questions, starting
conversations and thinking about problems. They see their audience as individual experts who
contribute to this process with their respective experiences. They want to gain and impart
knowledge. Studio Fundus provides space for collaboration, for debate, for negotiating and
exchanging ideas.
